I was the last Jedi Master. By most standards, I'm dead. By others, merely retired.

I've been advised that the above no longer suffices, even though I gather most of you have seen the vids. With that in mind, my story in its entirety.

I was born a long time ago, in a galaxy I'm told is far, far away from the one in which (for instance) aberranteyes lives, and raised to be a Jedi Knight, one of the order that had defended justice and peace in the Galactic Republic for a thousand generations. At the age of thirteen Standard years, I became Padawan Learner to the great maverick of the Jedi Order, Master Qui-Gon Jinn.

At the age of 25, I went with Master Qui-Gon to negotiate an end to the Trade Federation's blockade of the peaceful planet Naboo. We found that the blockade was a prelude to an open invasion, and that the invasion had the support of the Sith, the Dark Jedi we had thought were destroyed at Ruusan a thousand years before. In the end, with the help of Naboo's Queen Amidala, the outcast Gungan Jar Jar Binks, and a young pilot from a desert planet on the Outer Rim, we defeated the Trade Federation and freed Naboo, though Master Qui-Gon perished in a duel with the Sith Lord known as Darth Maul. I was elevated to the rank of full Jedi Knight for my defeat of Maul; fulfilling my promise to my dying Master, I took on that young pilot, Anakin Skywalker, as my Padawan Learner.

Ten Standard years later, a crisis that had been building for two years came to a head, as it came to war with Count Dooku — once a Jedi himself, and Qui-Gon's own Master in fact — and his "Confederacy of Independent Systems" (driven by the Trade Federation and other mighty engines of Galactic commerce). Chancellor Palpatine, once the Senator from Naboo, was granted emergency powers by the Senate, which also authorised the creation of a Grand Army of the Republic. Little did any of us know, then, that Palpatine was actually Maul's master, Darth Sidious, and that Dooku was Sidious' new apprentice, Darth Tyrannus. He had created the threat, of the Trade Federation and the Separatists, from which he would deliver the Republic — by destroying it.

By the time we knew what was really going on, it was already too late. Palpatine had become Emperor. Anakin had died, by my hand and his own, and been reborn as Sidious' final apprentice, Darth Vader. The Jedi Order was scattered to the stars, to be hunted down and exterminated by Vader and the Emperor's other servants.

I escaped them by returning to Tatooine, Anakin's home planet, reasoning that Vader's new master would not wish him to be reminded of Anakin's life. I took with me Luke Skywalker, Anakin's son by his secret marriage to Padme Amidala. For the next 20 Standard years, as the Galactic Empire tightened its grip, I watched from a safe distance as Luke was raised in the home of his father's stepfather Cliegg Lars and stepbrother Owen.

In the end, it was a pair of droids that had once belonged to Anakin and Padme that drew me out of hiding. Luke's twin sister Leia, who'd been raised in the house of Bail Organa on Alderaan, had sent one of the droids to me with a message for the Alliance to Restore the Republic, "the Rebel Alliance" as it was less formally known. Imperial stormtroopers killed the Larses; with nothing left to tie him to Tatooine, Luke agreed to come with me to Alderaan and to become the last Padawan.

I wouldn't live to complete his training. While the smuggler we'd hired (through an old friend) was ferrying us through hyperspace, Alderaan was destroyed by the Death Star, the Imperial superweapon whose blueprints Leia had stolen. The disturbance in the Force left me greatly weakened. The duel with Darth Vader, in which my body perished, did nothing but hasten the inevitable.

My consciousness survived in the Force, the energy field that connects all life and from which a Jedi's powers flow. I appeared to Luke a handful of times after his death, but I was always with him. When he resisted the temptations of Vader and Sidious, I was never more pleased to have been wrong.

I thought I could pass into the Force and be done. But it appears Anakin needs me, in the corner of the afterlife where he's found himself. And so, I have gone to him, for as long as I am required.

There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no death, there is the Force.
